AGILITY SEMINARS

FOUR FUN SEMINARS WITH
DUDLEY SHUMATE!
SUNDAY, JULY 28 & MONDAY, JULY 29, 2024

Dudley has been an International Team member on numerous teams with multiple dogs, both big and small, and is currently on the WAO Team with her small sport mix TKake.  She’s been on National podiums in UKI, USDAA, and AKC, including winning the AKC NAC with 2 different dogs.  She even won the Games Championship at the US Open with Terry Herman's dog, Mellie.

Dudley's teaching style and philosophy are similar to her ideas on handling: "I provide choices and stress consistencies. I encourage students to think for themselves and create fluent communication for each pup. My goal as a trainer, competitor, and my pups' best friend, is to create a fluency of 'language' while having a great time! I believe in thinking about why things work and practicing with intention so I can let all that go and be totally in the moment when it's time to shine. My pups are my family first and we travel all over the country enjoying hiking, teaching, and going very fast in the agility ring!" Before "going to the dogs" Dudley was a horse trainer and avid three-day competitor. A love for all creatures and a passion for finding ways to connect is the foundation of her training.

Sunday, July 28, 2024 - 8 working spots per seminar.  Limited Auditors

8:30 AM - 12:00 PM • GO! WHOA! YO!

For our dogs to do a course as fast as possible, it's our job as handlers to be the best navigators we can be. This means having a system of communication (verbal and physical cues) that is as clear, efficient, and timely as possible. In this class, you will use fun exercises to teach your dog the three critical modes of focus that she must be able to transition between on an agility course, and that you must be able to communicate clearly:

  • Go! = Extension. The dog runs as fast as she can, taking all obstacles on a path/line that does not require a turn until she runs out of obstacles OR you signal a turn.
  • Whoa! = Collection. The dog shortens the length of her stride in preparation for a change of direction and shifts to more handler focus in order to perceive the new direction of path which includes obstacles.
  • Yo! = Bypass an obstacle. The dog comes directly to you without taking any obstacles regardless of what your position and motion might suggest.
  • The goal is to work on your mechanics for cueing each mode so that you can become fluent and don't have to think about your handling, and your dog understands exactly what you want.

Jumps and tunnels only.  Appropriate for Pre-Competition/Novice dogs

1:00 PM - 4:30 PM • BALANCED STEERING - Refine your handling communication
This seminar will help teams analyze jump/tunnel sequences in an effort to improve the timing and execution of handler choices; such as when to accelerate/decelerate, or perform a front, blind or rear cross.
Jumps and tunnels only.  Appropriate for pre-competition/novice dogs.

Monday, July 29, 2024 - 8 working spots per seminar.  Limited Auditors

8:30 AM - 12:00 PM • NOW WHAT?

What do you do when things don’t go as planned on course? Can you react, respond, recover and succeed?  We’ll use exercises and drills to practice just that kind of scenario to improve your reaction time and show you that you can recover and keep your wits about you when something comes up you hadn’t planned. All equipment may be used in this seminar. Intended primarily for those currently competing above the Novice level.

Due to noise restriction during normal weekday business hours at ODTC (Monday), uncontrollable and constant barking is not allowed and dogs will be excused without refund. Please take that into consideration when registering.

1:00 PM - 4:30 PM • DISTANCE! STOP RUSHING - START CONNECTING

Being successful at agility is not always about "running fast"... it's about giving the dog the information it needs in a timely manner and training them to be able to do it regardless of your position. The focus of this workshop is to improve teams' communication at a distance. Using sequences, you will find out what your dog can do, what needs improvement and how to handle your dog from a distance.  Dogs should be able to perform all obstacles without handler management. All equipment may be used in this seminar.

Due to noise restriction during normal weekday business hours at ODTC (Monday), uncontrollable and constant barking is not allowed and dogs will be excused without refund. Please take that into consideration when registering.

Introductory Agility Workshop & Evaluation for Foundations
Monday, July 29, 6:15-8:15pm

Curious about training your dog for agility? Want to know how to begin?

Given the high level of interest in Introductory Agility classes, Oriole Dog Training Club is offering Intro to Agility. Join us for this free workshop!

Oriole’s curriculum is designed to ensure that each training team is given the best chance to succeed in pursuit of their goals. To ensure this happens, we believe that all teams should have a firm grasp on basic training concepts and address any potential issues prior to beginning an agility journey. We believe agility excellence is a marathon, not a sprint!

To that end, a prerequisite for Foundation to Dog Sports (the first step in our agility journey) will be 1) successful completion of Basic Obedience OR 2) CGC title OR 3) successful evaluation of your dog at Intro to Agility Night (registration details below).

Proof of successful completion of any of these three prerequisite(s) must be provided at the time of the Fall Session registration. *NOTE—Successful evaluation at the Intro to Agility evening DOES NOT GUARANTEE a spot in upcoming session. Everyone must follow the registration protocol to sign up for upcoming classes.

During the Intro to Agility workshop, which is free to attend, we will cover:

• Information on ODTC

• An overview of what skills a dog needs to successfully participate in an agility class

• Different Agility organizations for which ODTC offers trials

• Agility Rules

• A demonstration of Agility

• Discussion of supplemental agility resources (Online, Books, Videos)

• Home Training Equipment

• Evaluation of dogs for placement into Foundations of Dog Sports (Max of 10).
*NOTE—Successful evaluation at the Intro to Agility evening DOES NOT GUARANTEE a spot in upcoming session but will satisfy the requirement to sign up for any future Foundations class.

Again, there is no fee to attend. But we request you register in advance

Who Should Come?

• Anyone curious about doing agility at ODTC is welcome to come and audit (leave your dog at home).
