VERBALS OF THE WEEK
Weekly Workshops
with Terry Herman

These 6 workshops will cover 1) various ways to teach different agility verbal commands useful at all levels and 2) the physical cues needed to support the verbals. While most weeks will concentrate on one specific verbal, two (tunnel breaks & go on/out) will cover two or more related commands. Jumps and tunnels only. Dogs must be able to drive forward from the handler to a jump.

Wednesday, July 22
Wrap Around a Wing - a verbal that means the dog should drive to the jump and turn tightly around the wing at least 180 degrees back toward the side the handler started on.

Wednesday, July 29
Keep Going Forward vs Move away Laterally (both) - a verbal that tells the dog to continue ahead of the handler down a line of obstacles and another that tells the dog to move laterally away from the handler to take an obstacle.

Wednesday, August 5
Backside Jump - a verbal that tells the dog to go to the back (not approach side) of a jump and jump it back towards the handler.

Wednesday, August 12
Turn Away Over a Jump - a verbal that tells the dog to drive ahead of the handler over a jump and turn away from the side the handler started on (often a rear cross).

Wednesday, August 19
Tunnel Breaks/Brakes - v
erbal cues that tell the dog how to exit the tunnel - go straight forward; tight turn back toward the handler; or soft turn toward the handler.

Wednesday, August 26
Threadle Slice - a verbal that tells the dog to come toward the handler and then turn away and take an obstacle away from the handler.

8 working spots in each workshop, auditors welcome.

ORIOLE DOG TRAINING CLUB WELCOMES BACK
DUDLEY SHUMATE
MONDAY, JULY 27, 2026

Dudley has been an International Team member on numerous teams with multiple dogs, both big and small, and is currently on the WAO Team with her small sport mix TKake.  She’s been on National podiums in UKI, USDAA, and AKC, including winning the AKC NAC with 2 different dogs. She even won the Games Championship at the US Open with Terry Herman's dog, Mellie, and she just won onto the 2026 AWC Team!

Dudley's teaching style and philosophy are similar to her ideas on handling: "I provide choices and stress consistencies. I encourage students to think for themselves and create fluent communication for each pup. My goal as a trainer, competitor, and my pups' best friend, is to create a fluency of 'language' while having a great time! I believe in thinking about why things work and practicing with intention so I can let all that go and be totally in the moment when it's time to shine. My pups are my family first and we travel all over the country enjoying hiking, teaching, and going very fast in the agility ring!" Before "going to the dogs" Dudley was a horse trainer and avid three-day competitor. A love for all creatures and a passion for finding ways to connect is the foundation of her training.

Dudley is known for her insight, sense of humor and fun seminars. You can see lots of her amazing runs on YouTube and her Facebook page. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from this incredible trainer and handler! Come join us!

MONDAY, JULY 27, 2026 - 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8:30 am - 12:00 pm • GOTTA GREEN DOG?
To achieve success with your green dog, it's important to train them to work away from you and to move ahead confidently, to transition focus between the handler/obstacle and vice versa. This will provide a solid foundation for advanced skills such as layering, lateral distance, and strong forward sends. Let's get your dog started on the right track! Dogs should be comfortable with jumps, tunnels, and sequencing 4-6 obstacles.

1:00 pm - 4:30 pm PROBLEM SOLVING WITH DUDLEY!
What if you could improve your handling skills? Do you have two specific handling issues that you're unsure how to manage or want to manage better? This seminar is perfect for you! Please submit two handling issues that you would like to work on, and Dudley will help you learn the most effective ways to address them. This seminar is designed for experienced teams and will focus on resolving handling issues; it is not intended for training new skills. Jumps and tunnels only.

Cost: Oriole Members - $150 per seminar; Non-members - $160 per seminar.
Auditing: Oriole members $40 per session. Non-Oriole members $45 per session.

  • THERE ARE WAY MORE TO ADD BUT YOU CAN SEE SHE’S AMAZING AND ACCOMPLISHED!!!!

Christine loves working with students.  Her first and most important goal is to instill a love of the game in both the handler and the dog, regardless of the competition level. “It’s a game and if it’s not fun then we are not doing it right!”

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 2026 - 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8:30 am-12:00 pm
THREADLES 1.0
Confused by threadles? You see other handlers performing threadles but your'e not sure where to use them or how to do them? In this workshop, we will teach you how to execute both threadle wraps and threadle slices from the ground up. You will learn how to perform them and understand when to use each one effectively! Jumps and tunnels only. This session is ideal for young dogs, green dogs, or any team new to threadles.

1:00 pm-4:30 pm THREADLES 2.0
Feeling confident with your threadles? Let’s put them to the test! In this workshop, we’ll run short and mid-length sequences with threadles at challenging angles, incorporating layers, discriminations, and more. Jumps and tunnels only. This workshop is suitable for dogs at all levels that know how to perform a threadle but wants to perfect both threadle wraps and threadle slices.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2026 - 8 working slots per seminar, limited auditors

8:30 am-12:00 pm
TURN A LITTLE, TURN A LOT
In this seminar, you will work on soft turns and tight turns. Sometimes you need your dog to turn tight, while other times a gentle turn is needed, and you can’t always be there!  Teaching a dog to turn should not be a source of stress for either the dog or the handler. This workshop will teach your dog the difference between the two turns, help perfect your timing, and build handler confidence in executing them. Jumps and tunnels only. This workshop is ideal for young dogs or older dogs that need to learn turns.

1:00 pm-4:30 pm YOU GO THAT WAY, I'M GOING THIS WAY
How do you teach your dog to go in one direction while you’re going in a different direction? Do you need your dog to drive forward to a wrap while you head in the opposite direction? Do you want your dog to move away from you laterally while you continue straight? Can you send your dog to a backside while you move away from the jump? This workshop will help you identify and execute the verbal and physical cues you need when your motion doesn’t support the dog’s line. Jumps, tunnels, & weaves. This workshop is suitable for dogs that are sequencing and competent with obstacles.

Cost: Oriole Members - $135 per seminar; Non-members - $145 per seminar.  Auditing: Oriole members - $40 per session; Non-members $45 per session.

Online registration and payment are required.

“The joy of dog obedience training lies in making a deep connection with each dog we train.

Join Marion Crain for her dynamic Making the Connection seminar and discover how true engagement and drive become the foundation for every successful obedience exercise. The strength of your foundation - and how each exercise is originally taught - determines whether you have solid pieces to return to as training advances and new challenges arise in the show ring. This seminar focuses on building a powerful working relationship between you and your dog, creating clarity, reliability, and enthusiasm that carry seamlessly from practice to competition. Marion will teach you how to truly teach your dog, what to look for throughout the learning process, and how to develop sustained motivation and sharp focus so connection comes first and precision naturally follows. If you want more animation, stronger performance, and a dog that works in genuine partnership with you, this seminar is one you won’t want to miss.

This seminar is designed to help you build a relationship with your dog that you can take into the ring. Marion will focus on the methods she uses to build drive & motivation; finding the balance between control and drive; and avoiding and managing food and toy dependence.
SATURDAY: Training philosophy & foundation, including use of food and toys; quick and motivating transitions; precise animated heeling; speedy recalls and returns; and stationary positions in preparation for signals and command discrimination.

The course teaches first aid and CPR techniques using authentic canine CPR manikins, to address emergencies that can occur with small and large dogs as well as cats. The class will train you to notice abnormalities and detect early warning signs in pets. You will learn essential pre-vet care and life saving techniques for those times when immediate action can make all the difference. There will be a handout which emphasizes the major points with a section for note-taking. A standard Stop the Bleed certificate will be issued.

Scott has 39 years of experience as a first responder. He is the Captain of the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Co, as well as an EMT, and certified CPR instructor/instructor evaluator with Baltimore County Fire and Medical Training, Over the years he has many occasions to deal with medical emergencies with dogs, including rescues from fires and performing CPR with a ventilation mask, and even caring for a dog who had been hit by a train. Scott has, personally, has owned dogs his entire life, and his family currently includes Bella, a shepherd lab mix, Lizzie, an American Foxhound, and Zues, a pit lab mix. As a first responder and dog owner, he has encountered many occasions of emergencies ranging from dog fights and the aftermath, dogs eating bad things to the simple treatment of ticks.
